Terrain forms a large part of age of sigmar, much more so than Warhammer fantasy where it was typically ignored and shunned upon to put down more than 6 pieces. i remember seeing a example of a good idea for the amount of terrain in AoS being 1.5 pieces per 1 square foot so 16 total for a 4x6 battlefield.
